The Macy Letters"Walter Graeme Ladd's wife, Catherine ("Kate")
Everit Macy Ladd, was only distantly related to the R.H. Macy store branch
of the Macy family. Her family (Thomas Macy) came to Massachusetts circa
1635 from England and became one of the families to purchase Nantucket
Island. In the 19th century, the family moved to New York and operated a
profitable shipping commission business and, ultimately, opened a refinery
there. It was the refinery business that connected Kate's father, Josiah
Macy Jr., to John D. Rockefeller and Standard Oil. So, Kate Macy Ladd's
money was derived from the shipping and refining/Standard Oil business,
not the retail store. Walter Graeme Ladd, from all accounts, did not come
from wealth; virtually all of the money that supported the Ladds lifestyle
was Macy money." Click on the image for the enlarged version |
